Advanced security
New security features provide comprehensive protection against advanced threats.
Secure data transfer is handled by the latest version of the most widespread security protocol on the internet, TLS 1.3, which encrypts data and ensures a secure communication channel between two endpoints. HTTPS and TLS 1.3 protocols are now enabled by default in Windows Server 2022 and protect the data of clients connecting to the server.
More information about supported TLS versions and supported cipher suites.
SMB AES-256 Encryption for Maximum Security
Windows Server now supports AES-256-GCM and AES-256-CCM cipher suites for SMB encryption and signing.
Windows Server will automatically enforce this more advanced encryption method when connecting to another computer that also supports it.
Windows Server still supports AES-128 for lower-level compatibility.
SMB Compression
In Windows Server 2022, customers can also take advantage of file server enhancements such as SMB compression, which improves application file transfer by compressing data during network transfer.
Secure DNS
The DNS client in Windows Server 2022 now supports DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH), which encrypts DNS queries using the HTTPS protocol. This helps keep your traffic as confidential as possible by preventing eavesdropping and tampering with your data. Find more information about configuring the DNS client to use DoH here.
Microsoft Edge browser
In Windows Server 2022 Datacenter, the new Microsoft Edge, built on the open-source Chromium and supported by Microsoft's security and innovation, replaces the outdated Internet Explorer. Find more information in the Microsoft Edge Enterprise documentation. Please note that Microsoft Edge, unlike the rest of Windows Server, follows the Modern lifecycle. For details, see the Microsoft Edge lifecycle documentation.
